About
Dâryuš Makâni, a native of Folsom, California, moved to San Francisco in 2019 to pursue a degree in classical composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Raised as a classical pianist and taking up composing and a half dozen other instruments, their style began to branch out beyond the confines of concert music and into popular and media music. During their studies, they composed and produced music for the Smithsonian American Art Museum "Beyond The Walls" virtual reality experience and the African Community & Conservation Project’s TV Special Endangered Rangers.
Their solo project, Ference, started life in a lo-fi and bossa nova inspired E.P. What Will I Have Done during early 2020, and was followed up later by Bits and Pieces, a more electronic and rock inspired concept album. Ference finished off 2021 with a couple singles, more prominently Re:Run and Paperboy, before Dâryuš joined forces with singer-songwriter Garrett Wilmoth to form queer indie rock band Market Street Station. The two self-released their E.P Urban Incident No. 1 during their studies at SFCM.
Stepping back into classical music, Dâryuš joined forces with composer and soprano Marie Johnson to compose a segment of an opera entitled The Disappearance of Ava Morgan, which follows a woman trapped within a virtual reality murder trial. The preview premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in May of 2024. This work joined his portfolio of classical pieces.
Under the Ference moniker, Dâryuš wrote Cold Wrists for Zander Netherbrand, a Virtual Youtuber from FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION EN’s Avallum.
In November 2024, Dâryuš came together with colleague Tyler Kinnaman to form 4Against Music, a music collective and indie label structured around monthly releases. Market Street Station came crashing back with a new single, Gehenna, which was released in January 2025 along with the group's first music video.
Dâryuš continues to play, record and produce for the band and projects within 4Against Music, as well as teaching lessons in piano and composition at the MidPeninsula Music Academy in Redwood City.
